WHAT IS A FALSE CEILING?

A false ceiling is an artificial ceiling done below the main roof of a room or a building. It can also be called a second layer of the roof, hanging from the main roof with the help of suspended support called hangers.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF PROVIDING FALSE CEILING IN BUILDINGS?

The main advantages of providing false ceilings are.

a) The false ceiling improves the aesthetic appearance of interior spaces.

b) By providing a false ceiling the room height can be proportionally reduced and can make us feel more compact and pleasant.

c) False ceilings act as heat insulators and reduce the air conditioning load. The air gap between False ceiling and roof acts as a nonconducting medium that can control heat transmissions to the room. Less heat /cold transmission can reduce power bills.

d) A false ceiling hides air condition ducts, fire sprinkler lines, wiring for concealed light systems, security systems, etc. and provides an excellent look to the ceilings.

e) Additional ceiling lights can be provided in the false ceiling. On providing additional lights in the right places ambient lighting inside the rooms can be improved drastically.

f) A false ceiling acts as an acoustic insulator and function as a noise reduction medium (mainly in auditoriums and movie halls)

g) False ceiling can provide fire protection as the materials constituting false ceiling are mostly fire rated.

h) False ceiling is economical and easy to install and any damages can be rectified in parts.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPE OF FALSE CEILING

False ceiling can be differentiated into many types based on the location of application, the material used, appearance, and visibility. The common types of false ceiling used nowadays are as follows.

a) PLASTER OF PARIS (POP)
b) GYPSUM TILES /BOARD FALSE CEILING
c) METAL FALSE CEILING ( TILE TYPE & PLANK TYPE)
d) WOODEN FALSE CEILING
e) PVC FALSE CEILING
f) FABRIC FALSE CEILING
g) MINERAL FIBRE BOARD FALSE CEILING
h) OPEN CELL FALSE CEILING
I) CALCIUM SILICATE FALSE CEILING.

WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF FALSE CEILING?

One of the major concerns of false ceiling is the reduction in the height of rooms which can make installation of fans very difficult. There are chances of fittings accidentally falling from the false ceiling. The false ceiling may sag and decolorise in course of time and have to be replaced occasionally. Rodents and Pests can easily enter the false ceiling. There are chances of the false ceiling falling over due to the lack of proper hangers and supports.

BASIC INSTALLATION METHODOLOGY OF FALSE CEILING
a) The room diagonals has to be checked and ensure that the room walls are perpendicular to each other . Care should be taken at the time of brick work to ensure 90 degree of the walls.
b) Plastering shall be done around 150 mm above the false ceiling height. Mostly the main ceiling and area above false ceiling may not be plastered. Only rendering shall be done in case of concrete surfaces. Basic coat of primer and putty shall be done on the walls before starting false ceiling works. Painting can be done after completion of works.
c) The cabling /wiring relating to all concealed systems like Ceiling lights, Air condition system , Fire alarm and sprinklers, security cameras etc shall be done before starting of false ceiling.Under deck insulation if any shall be done before doing the false ceiling. The ducts for supply and return air for air condition system shall be completed and insulated before starting False ceiling works.
d) The false ceiling level has to be marked all around the room using marking fluids Edge angle / Wall angle shall be fixed in line with the marking .
e) Appropriate hangers (steel wires/steel angles ) in line with the false ceiling system shall be fixed to the ceiling using anchor fasteners ( the hanger type may vary according to ceiling type and manufacturer). Main grids shall be hanged from the hangers and end of the main grids shall rest on the wall angle. Intermediate tees/ sections are fixed on the main grid. The ceiling boards or tiles shall be laid/ fixed on the grids.
e) Cut outs required for fixtures shall be done on the board as per drawings and additional members shall be provided around the openings so that the ceiling can stand the load of fittings.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE DONE WHILE DOING FALSE CEILING
a)
Check with the services drawings and ensure all internal wiring works shall be done before doing false ceiling.
b) Care should be taken to ensure the hangers are strong enough to take the false ceiling load and fasteners has to be drilled deeply.
c) The centre portion of the false ceiling shall be kept little bit higher than the external portion to counter the sagging of false ceiling in course of time. Light layouts and marking for cut outs shall be marked and checked before cutting
d) Extra members if required shall be provided if any member is coming in line with the fixtures.
e) All openings made for cable entry and ducting have to be properly sealed before doing false ceiling to restrict pests and rodents from entering the area.
